A Costly Lesson: My Experience with Unprofessional Equipment Service

Opening a business is already a challenging journey. It requires time, investment, trust, and careful planning. Unfortunately, my recent experience with an autoclave service provider became a lesson in what can go wrong when professionalism and transparency are missing.

From the beginning, there was no clear communication regarding pricing. At no point—before or after the service—was I given a set or agreed-upon cost. As a business owner preparing to open my shop, this immediately created uncertainty, but I trusted the process would be handled professionally.

That trust was misplaced.

The technician claimed that parts needed to be ordered, yet no invoice or proof of purchase was ever provided. When the service was supposedly completed, I was presented with a bill that was significantly higher than expected, with no itemized breakdown or explanation of the charges. Even more concerning, my autoclave was withheld until payment was made, leaving me in a position where I felt pressured and without options.

For anyone in industries like tattooing and piercing, equipment like an autoclave is not optional—it is essential for safety, compliance, and operation. Being put in a situation where critical equipment is essentially held until an unclear and unverified payment is made is not just frustrating—it is unacceptable.

This experience highlighted the importance of clear agreements, written estimates, and verified documentation before allowing any service work to begin. Transparency is not a luxury in business—it is a necessity.

I am sharing this not only to speak on my personal experience but to encourage other business owners to protect themselves. Always request written quotes, ask for invoices on parts, and ensure there is a clear understanding of costs upfront. These steps can prevent unnecessary stress and financial strain.

If anyone would like to know more about my experience, I am open to sharing additional details. I have maintained documentation, including records and video evidence, to support everything stated.

Building a business should be about growth and opportunity—not navigating avoidable setbacks caused by unprofessional practices. My hope is that sharing this helps others make informed decisions and avoid similar situations.
